How big can my contract file be?
Fusial accepts .docx files up to 25 MB per upload. This page covers what counts toward the limit, what to do if your contract is too large, and what causes upload failures unrelated to size.
Fusial accepts .docx files up to 25 MB per upload.
What counts toward the limit
The size limit is the on-disk size of the .docx file you upload — the same number you'd see in your file browser. That includes:
- Document text and formatting
- Tracked changes and comments
- Embedded images, logos, and signatures
- Embedded fonts
- Embedded objects (Excel tables, PDFs inserted into the document)
- Document version history stored inside the
.docx
Why a contract might be larger than expected
Most contracts are well under a megabyte. If your file is unusually large, one of these is usually the cause:
- Embedded images at original resolution — a 10 MB logo embedded once is a 10 MB document. Right-click the image in Word → Compress Pictures.
- Pasted screenshots — screenshots dragged into a contract are usually uncompressed PNGs. Compress or replace with a vector logo.
- Embedded files — an embedded Excel workbook or PDF can dwarf the contract text.
- Long revision history inside the file — older contracts that have been round-tripped many times can carry kilobytes of stale tracked changes from previous versions.
What to do if your file is too large
- Open the file in Word.
- Run File → Info → Inspect Document and remove embedded objects you don't need.
- Use Compress Pictures on any images.
- Save As a new
.docx(don't overwrite the original — you may want it later). - Upload the new file.
If the contract is genuinely a large redlined master agreement and won't shrink under the limit, contact support — we can advise on splitting the document or raising the limit for your plan.
Upload failures that aren't about size
If a file is well under the limit but still fails to upload, see What file formats does Fusial support? — the most common causes are password protection, file corruption, or .doc/.docm extensions disguised as .docx.
