What file formats does Fusial support?
Fusial works with Microsoft Word .docx files. Other formats — including .doc, .pdf, .rtf, Google Docs, and Pages — aren't supported directly. This page explains why and how to convert your contract into a supported format.
Fusial works with Microsoft Word .docx files. That's the only file type you can upload to a contract.
Why only .docx
Fusial's redline review depends on Word's tracked-changes format, which is part of the .docx standard. Tracked changes are how the AI sees every edit a counterparty made, anchors suggestions to specific paragraphs, and re-exports a clean version without losing the negotiation history. Other formats either don't carry tracked changes (PDF, plain text) or carry them in a structure Fusial can't read losslessly (.doc, Google Docs export).
What about .doc, .docm, .rtf, or .pdf?
| Format | What to do |
|---|---|
.docx | Upload directly. |
.doc (Word 97–2003) | Open in Word, choose File → Save As, and save as .docx. |
.docm (macro-enabled) | Save as .docx to drop the macros, then upload. |
.rtf | Open in Word and save as .docx. |
.pdf | See Does Fusial support Google Docs or PDF? |
| Pages, Google Docs | Export to .docx first. See Does Fusial support Google Docs or PDF? |
What if my file is technically .docx but won't upload?
A few .docx files can still fail to ingest. The common causes:
- Password-protected files — remove the password in Word (File → Info → Protect Document → Encrypt with Password, then clear the password) and re-upload.
- Corrupt files — open the file in Word; if Word reports an issue, accept Word's repair and save a fresh copy.
- Files exported from a non-Word tool — re-saving the file through Word once usually cleans up non-standard XML.
- Files larger than the limit — see How big can my contract file be?.
If a clean .docx still won't upload, contact support with the file and the exact error message.
